The syntax looks OK, including the share/path part.
However, I don't know if a WD NAS is case-sensitive; I know Linux is.
So, perhaps your problem is in /workflow/ versus /WORKFLOW/

Are you sure nothing is written in the top-level directories?
By default FFS writes a lock-file right at the start of a Comparison, and removes it after the sync is finished or FFS is closed in a regular fashion.
See the description of the LockDirectoriesDuringSync flag.

Could it be that Z:\AARC\4\MK\Final is your Versioning location?
Or perhaps there are one or more symbolic links pointing to Z:?

For the source-side (source => portable-drive), this sounds a lot like what I suggested as a Fast option or variant in this reply.
Let's see if Zenju is open to it.

For the destination-side (portable-drive => destination), it could be a plain Update sync.

You can use the FreeFileSync (FFS) option of Versioning.
For files that are deleted or overwritten by FFS, this allows you to keep as many previous versions as you select for as long as you select, in a user specified location.

RecycleBin~5b04.ffs_tmp (or anything like that) is not the place to (try to) recover files. Depending on how you have set "Delete and Overwrite" in your Sync settings (F8), you should be able to find files that were deleted or overwritten by FFS in your systems Recycle Bin (=default settin...

Then use the Custom sync variant.
In that variant you can customize which actions are taken for the different Compare result categories.

Why would you not be allowed to distribute your software while not distributing the software your software depends on? The world is e.g. full of software that depends on Windows. You are even allowed to distribute FreeFileSync with your software, as long as you stick to the conditions as stated here...

Your proposal only makes sense if you could be absolutely sure no changes have occurred in between the previous comparison session, of which the results are stored in said file, and the new/resumed comparison session.
But how could you be sure?
Right! Run a new full compare.

If the directory structure in your dir1 is (completely) different from that on your SD card, then FreeFileSync seems to not be the tool for your job.

Perhaps you did not account for Daylight Saving Time.

So, you did not remove the FTP connected location (your top location) in the list of folders to be monitored by RTS.
Click the minus-icon in front of your FTP location.
