Re: Sync stops with errors: "E:\SOFTWARE\Recyclebin~142c.ffs_tmp\folder"

Zenju explained the use of the Recyclebin...ffs_tmp folder here.
Most likely cause for your problem seems to be multiple instances of FFS running at the same time or early termination of an FFS instance.

Re: Synchronising is writing files to my hard drive

If you sync between two external drives, the only files that get written locally by FFS are:
* the global-settings file (GlobalSettings.xml)
* the log-file (normally in the users AppData\Roaming\FreeFileSync\Logs folder)
* and, if configured like that, files from Versioning

Your post is a bit confusing, because you write RealTimeSync (RTS), where the pictures and problems you describe concern FreeFileSync (FFS). A FFS TwoWay sync does exactly what you describe under 1), 2) and 3), provided that under 2), you read the "newest" file as: the file that changed th...

From the RTS manual page : ... Not fully clear what is happening here, but it seems your sync tries to update your All About The Paper (ADN Edit).wav file that was already present in your right-side location by the version of that file in your left-side location, that you use the "Recycle bin" as your Delete Files metho...

Your Exclude Filter entries C:\$RECYCLE.BIN\*\ - D:\$RECYCLE.BIN\*\ - E:\$RECYCLE. BIN\*\ are wrong, because they specify an absolute path, while the Include and Exclude Filter need to contain a path relative to the left and right base location (although Zenju added some smart adaptations to partial...

The warning is correct. Your first right-side location is G:\Software\Firefox\Profiles while your third right-side location is G:\Software Therefore, your first right-side location is part of your third right-side location, which constitutes an overlap, and therefore a risk of unintended sync action...

I suppose you now have FFS run a *.ffs_batch sync configuration.
If you save your sync configuration as a *.ffs_gui sync configuration.
When you have FFS run a *.ffs_gui sync configuration, it always opens in the FFS GUI.

Re: some ffs info lost when updating from donation edition

The info you refer to is only saved when you close/terminate FFS in a regular way.
If you kill FFS in a non-regular way, e.g. via the task manager, or by a reboot, that info is not saved.
Likely, running an installation of a new/other version of FFS while FFS is still open also qualifies as such.

Run (just) a Compare for an Update sync variant, make just the relevant Compare proposed actions (copy to the right-side, and update right-side) visible (mid below the Compare results), select all those files (Ctrl-A), and then copy the selected files to a chosen location, as per https://freefilesyn...
