Using old version for years (Mac), upgraded to donation version today.

What do you mean you can't type into the input box. What happens instead?

Is some firewall blocking the internet access?

I have the same issue. Even if I get the Activation Key, I can't type it into the input box.
I don't think that it's a Firewall issue. The box doesn't accept any keyboard input.
My macOS is the latest one (10.13.6).

Fixed! I've updated the macOS Donation Edition; the input field should work now.

Hi Zenju
Thanks, manual activation is working now for me. However, the automatic version check is still not working, but I've found the reason: the Web-Protection module of AVAST AV! After deactivating it, version check is running properly.
I tried to exclude the hostname "freefilesync.org", but it seems that FFS is using another hostname for this version check.
If you provide me the hostname and protocol (http or https), I'll try again to exclude it from AVAST blocking.

I am having similar problems, but I am not running web filtering or web protection software. is there a known issue with donation edition on mac where the program cannot connect to check for updates?
