So, I have learned that copying from Linux to Windows partitions like exFAT or NTFS has restrictions.

On further investigation, I found that it was not what it seemed. The destination was a USB drive, and it was formatted exFAT, not ext3 like the normal Linux partitions. So, exFAT does not allow many of the legal Linux characters, and does not allow a period at the end of a file, and perhaps doesn't ...

I have run into a similar failure with filenames having parentheses. Linux has no problem with any of these "special characters", and I don't use Windows, so I'd expect transfers from one drive to another on Linux to work with legal characters.
