Just to mention that Winmerge has an option that matches just on Modified Date (meaning Name+Modified) and may perhaps be of help in your task. You could easily do a folder (with subfolders) match and copy across all unmatched files from the one side and a delete on unmatched files on the other side.

When you've done a compare and it's lined up the two trees of files ready to action the file changes, there are buttons at the bottom you can toggle on/off viewing Creates, Updates, and Deletes. I know compression has come up before but I think I may have some new thoughts, which I'll put in the form of an outlined suggestion regarding NTFS. The settings themself could have a list of file extensions you want compressed for the backup. Obviously you may want doc,xls,txt,log,wav etc compresse...
