Crap !
I just rechecked the version (it was v5.10) ... I must have reinstalled the wrong one.
I have installed v5.11 now and it is working fine for the last 2 hours.
My mistake ... FFS is an excellent piece of software ...
Feel free to delete this whole thread if you can.

Some more information ....
Using compare file time and size the system works normal.
Using compare file contents also causes the very slow / high CPU bug.
I am using Mirror Sync which causes the bug (I have not tried other types of syncing).
Everything else is at the default settings.

v5.11 appears to still have the high CPU / slow file transfer bug
I am using FFS v5.11 to transfer 500GB (150,000 files) between two external USB 2.0 hard drives.
The transfer starts off fine in the 8-15 MB/s range then over the period of an hour or two CPU rises to 50% on my i7 and bandwidth drops to a crawl of a few bytes/s.
I have uninstalled the old version ...
