Re: Exponential slowdown when dealing with large numbers of small files

But I doubt caching is the issue as the files being transferred are small text files only a few KB each at most and when the folder is manually copied using robocopy from the command line in mirror mode (which makes it copy files similarly to a one way sync in FFS) it takes a very small fraction of...

Re: Exponential slowdown when dealing with large numbers of small files

I've found a temp work around, if I Clear browsing data / Cached images and files (all time) before I exit GoogleChrome then the \Code Cache\js directory is emptied and FFS works as before (I had to run it twice to clear out the other side of the mirror because I delete to the recycle bin). So I'm O...

Re: Exponential slowdown when dealing with large numbers of small files

I have had exactly the same problem since I installed 10.11 yesterday. Directories with many files bring it to a standstill. I noticed this most obviously on Google Chrome's \Code Cache\js directory which contained 65K or so very small files. I trimmed that last night to under 30K but my mirror this...

Yes. False alarm. I have both portable and local installations and I hadn't updated both.

FFS V7.7 doesn't like V7.6 batch files

OS Win8.1 Upgraded from V7.6 to V7.7 today and `FreeFileSync.exe Something.ffs_batch` Produces a dialog saying Configuration file "Something.ffs_batch" is incomplete. The missing elements will be set to their default values. The following XML elements could not be read: <FreeFileSync> <Mai...

Re: Feature request: use relative paths for a selected main path

do you know (it is hard to explain so isn't discussed much) you can do stuff in the batch files that can achieve most of this? since you seem an intelligent person I am going to challenge you to work it out yourself. mainly, I think you are the creator of your own problem. do the sync'd folders actually have different names or was that just to explain?
i.e. are you really syncing a file called ABC.txt between two directories with different names? Why are the folders not the same name?

Re: Not creating an exact copy on full sync

It isn't just a case of exclusion, there are a number of files that only make sense on one system and not another unless you are attempting to replicate a drive which is a different goal to synchronisation. Take for example ntuser files, you may copy these to another physical disk but they are unlik...

Re: FreeFile Sync and System & Hidden files

Personally I think this is a general issue. I can understand you not wanting to get involved, Zenju, as it isn't *your* OS but I have said previously and say again that I think the default list of excluded files for Win needs updating. AT the moment it is crap and doesn't reflect the change in Win o...

Re: How to see file date

if you right click on the top of the two file lists you can add date+time on both sides. you might want to start off with two-way rather than mirror and do things by hand until you get the hang of things and it might suit your selective update work process better

P.S. are you my brother in law?

What OS or more pertinently, what file system(s) ? Modified == Creation if no Modification has happened yet on most file systems so is generally redundant for sync purposes

Re: Not creating an exact copy on full sync

Presuming you're using Win there are some files that don't sensibly copy from one PC to another that could easily account for this. If you want to make a copy of a drive I wouldn't start with FFS.

Re: Is there a possibility to create log files in gui mode like it is done in batch mode?

I think the trick is to use the gui mode to open a batch script (i.e. the script has the log settings).

I use this often and it works here

Some time has passed, the world has spun around a bit but you seem to be in exactly the same place as before.

Most people would expect your version of FFS to have changed in the last year or so

Re: Where is File Versioning Limit in 5.23?

Ah, I thought you were Win only, my apols. If I can presume again you can use datenumber or similar mod 3 to get a cycle of 3 backups, etc. they'd be numbered 0, 1, 2 and you'd have to check the date to know which was most recent in case of a restore but it works for 2, 4, 5, n arbitrary cycles too.

Aaron, it is obviously not my call but I think there are enough specifics about your situation that you might need (yet) another thread. I'm thinking the combination of factors in your case is getting unusual. As a casual reader I think you want mirror as the main FFS mode but also need moved files ...

What is your requirement for XP SP2 ? XP SP 3 is the last supported by anyone in that series. To be clear, I can understand XP SP3 for operational reasons but not XP SP2 which is seriously dead If it is an issue of files there are number of utilities (including FFS under *nix) that may help, but the...
