For what its worth, I reinstalled the gigabit switch, and freefilesync did not
work, whereas many other freeware sync programs did. I gave up on FFS which
was a shame because when it did work it was great. I am very pleased to say
that portable version 5.3 works perfectly as earlier versions used to ...

Just in case someone else has a problem like this, it turned out to be a
gigabit switch in my network. Put in an old 10/100 switch to try it and
everything, including ffs is working like it used to. weird but im glad its
sorted.

To prove it wasnt just the folder that I was trying to sync to I made a "test"
folder on the xp machine, and shared it. I tried to sync 6 files from a folder
on the win7 pc to the xp pc. FFS correctly identified the difference between

Now i find if I use FFS to sync from my win7 pc to another xp pc on the
network, that xp pc will then sync ok to the pc that win7 pc wont. I have not
found any other faults on access or read write ability anywhere else on this
network?

Sounds like a network issue. Checking directory existence over a network can
take an insanely long time, making the app seem like frozen, if the network is
not reachable.

My network is serviceable, all tasks except ffs work as per normal. I have
used various network analysing tools which reveal no problem. The network
shares are in order. DirSync pro will sync to the folder FFS wont, and so will

oh by the way, if I let the program sit for a while after it decides not to
work i get an error "THE SPECIFIED NETWORK NAME IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE" which
is strange because i used FFS to browse for it????
