When I first tried to run FreeFileSync 10.12 "Donation Edition" on Linux, I got the error:
Installation files are corrupted. Please reinstall FreeFileSync.
Cannot open file "/etc/machine-id".
Error Code 2: No such file or directory [open]
The fix - create an empty file named "machine-id" in /etc, e.g., as root/sudo:
touch /etc/machine-id
To install FFS 10.12 Donation Version, simply unzip into desired path (I use $HOME/Applications/FreeFileSync) and run FFS from that path/folder - simple and straight forward.
CrowZ/Devuan v2 64 bit
Openbox DE so of course had to create menu entries...
Also running 10.12 standard on LM19.1 32 and 64 bit
- On the 32 bit system there wasn't a problem with 'machine_id' (MID). But that's likely because its 'date modified' was in June of 2018 and actually has a value so I suspect it was required previously by another app, I don't recall.
- On the 64 bit system, I can't definitively say that MID was 'installed' previous to FFS or not as I don't have free access to the system at the moment to check the MID 'date modified'. But FFS worked immediately without any issues. I will get back with the date if you are interested.
Interesting. In any case I've fixed the machine-id-not-found-issue for the next release.
GS is not available as a package with the Debian based distros I'm using. It appears GS was removed from Debian December 2015 with version 2.1.1-4.

Indeed, it looks like the manual should be updated. Maybe "kcron" is the best alternative?
