Explain batch jobs & "Select multiple configurations at a time"

I've backed up numerous programs and folders individually. I believe what I've come upon in Tips & Tricks, "Select multiple configurations at a time", is a process for updating all at once. Am I right?
My second guess is that I could have saved the results of each backup and that each would appear in the left column. When saving a job, batch is one of the save options. What does that mean and which do I use?
Also, once I've saved these jobs, is batch a process which is used to run jobs automatically (including multiple jobs)? If so how?
I believe the information is there but I don't know enough to understand it. Thanks
