Clarification about Donation Edition

Hi guys,

I have couple of questions about Donation Edition:

1. I have received email with link where I can find Donation Edition installation files. I can see computers that I have installed FFS DE to and remove them if needed. Will this link be still up?

2. When I download DE installation file and unpack it, it contains .key file. When is it used? During the installation itself? I don't point program to it and program still works if I delete whole folder where .key file is.

3. If newer version is released how do I download it? Do I need to donate again to get access to installation files for Donation Edition?

Thank you. :-)

1) > Will this link be still up?
Not sure what you exactly mean. But the link you received to the donation edition installation files remains active. Both for present and future releases.
Existing installations of your DE, as shown on/via the page of the link, can be removed there, but take 24 to 48 hour to not be shown any more.

2) The key-file is only required during installation, and then needs to be in the same folder as all other installation files of that FFS release.

3) By default, an installed DE shows a popup screen if a new release is available. This popup screen offers a couple of options to update. You can also use the FFS GUI menu option Help / Check for updates, which will show the same popup screen as mentioned before. Or you can use the FFS GUI menu option Help / About and use the bottom-left "Thank you, [your name], for your support" button to go to the web-page with your installation files. Obviously, you can also still use the web-link that was provided to you when donating.

1. Ok, so when somebody makes a donation, a sort of simplified profile is created, where person can download installation files for current/newest version of FFS and view/manage existing installations? And this profile is only accessible only via that link that is delivered by email? Am I getting this correctly? It's a bit different from other websites, where you create a profile/account, log into that and find all info and files there, so I'm bit confused. :-)

2. Got it.

3. Yup, I know about "Check for updates" option in FFS, but I didn't know that link to my "profile/account" is also in Help -> About menu. That's a nice helpful tip. :-)

1)
If you open the donation webpage-link, you can see the link has the form of
https://freefilesync.org/thank-you.php?tx=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
in which the X-s are a (donation-)user specific unique combination ID.
Effectively, your unique ID is your account/profile.

You can open said web page not just from the link you received after donating, but also open that same web-page via one of the buttons available in the FFS GUI, as described in my earlier reply.
