FFS and checksum calculators show same files

There are some files, e.g. rar files (e.g. 400 MB size), which FFS shows as
equal by content compare, but checksum calculators, e.g. HxD, HashMyFiles show
them as not equal.

What could that mean?

I don't know, are they equal? If "yes", FFS is right, the other tools buggy,
if "no", then it's conversely.

Thank you.

The other programs say the files are equal (one of them shows the difference),
so if that means - if I understand you right - they are equal, FFS is buggy
indeed...oy vey...and that means, that I may be have deleted files, which were
not equal.

OK, thanks again.

No it means you need to analyze the files yourself to see whats going on, e.g.
use a hex editor.

I assume, my skills are not like that, to do it...actually it would be enough
to know whether a file is equal to another or not.

So, do you mean FFS is buggy? And I rather should use other programs to find
out (none) equal files?

No, it is highly unlikely FFS has a bug in the simple file comparison routine.
What exactly is the categorization you see in FreeFileSync for the "not equal"
files?

I would say a "=" crossed with a red line.

Okay, and for the rar file in question it's a simple "=" then on white
background?

For the rar file shown as equal in FFS and not equal in other programs it
is...I do not remember the background color...sorry...but would be the
difference (between another background color, yellow)...?..may be it was
yellow...but...

Try to reproduce this problem with a minimal test case, e.g. a single pair of
.rar files that are not categorized as you would expect. We can then try to
analyze what is going on and I'll create a debugging version of FreeFileSync.

Thank you.

The files I have synchronized / compared and which were shown as equal by FFS
(displayed as having same attributes and not, so on yellow ground and white
one with "="), I have checked with other programs now (all by content), all
ones correct, same result.

I should have kept the problem rar files I have deleted, but I assume, they
would have been to big to download for you for testing, if you have wanted to
or I now could check again with a debugging version, yes.

It's better to test directly on your machine in order to not disturb the test
environment.

OK, so I will go on checking with other programs / tools each time I sync with
FFS the files displayed as equal by content.

Yes, and when you encounter the problem again, we have a test case to debug.

Yes, actually it was a bit or fully stupid to delete these rar files in
question, but...
