If sync'ing / copying over a network, the response time can be very slow
for a device to respond
More specifically, if the device isn't present on the network, 10+
seconds are wasted for the initial query to timeout
It would be better (and safer) to ping the device to at least verify its
presence prior to further negotiations
Naturally, some computers may be awoken from various sleep states by
pings and other polling attempts, so some amount of configurability
would be necessary to allow the user to specify timings and repetitions
for pings and subsequent file/folder queries
