As a person fairly new to the detail of recent Win file systems but very familiar with actual file systems I was wondering what other people choose to back up / sync and not back up and so on.
I'm exploring things from a Win 8.1 POV but I think Win OS's from Vista onwards are all similarly affected to some extent.
To begin with it seems to me the FFS default Filter / Exclude of
\System Volume Information\
\$Recycle.Bin\
\RECYCLER\
\RECYCLED\
*\desktop.ini
*\thumbs.db
is many years out of date. Think about all those ntuser.* files, there hasn't been any point in syncing them for over a decade.
I'm pretty sure I don't want all of the top level virtual Documents and Settings but I am damn sure I want some of it, ditto I specifically want some bits and pieces regarding Metro / Modern apps backed up.
This isn't a FFS specific issue, I am wondering how other people using FFS have dealt with it so far.

"all those ntuser files" is the user and system registry database. If I'm backing up my user directory from the root, I for one want that backed up. You should either exclude them yourself if you don't want them, or enable backing-up of locked files in the settings.
