#Comparison of Synctoy, Synkron and FreeFileSync?
##Backing up pictures and music
Hi all, what are the differences between Synkron, Synctoy or FFS?
Im currently investigating which of them to choose to sync my collection of
photos and music to an external hdd as a backup.
I know that Synctoy is windows only. Are there other differences, i.e. in
features or implementation?
Regards
jan

First of all, I'd suggest you simply try it out ;)
FreeFileSync's top features are probably performance and usability. For a more
or less complete feature list see Readme.txt.

Synctoy is really a toy ;).
1. Synctoy doesn't use Volume Shadow Copy, therefore locked files are not copied. FFS does that.
3. Setting up multiple pairs in Synctoy is GREAT pain. Very simple in FFS.
4. Synctoy Echo mode is weird. No "only from left to right" mode at all. FFS has this.
5. In order to transfer Synctoy folder pairs into another machine, you have to recreate them from scratch. It is a simple file copy operation with FFS.
All in all, forget Synctoy and your life is much better.

SyncToy2 also has a horrible bug that has not been fixed for more than one
year:
When syncing between NTFS and FAT file systems (a typical sync between hard
disk and a memory stick) it messes up the file time stamps so that they differ
by a number of hours (equal to time zone difference with UTC), so identical
files are unnecessarily copied, and I believe that copying in the wrong
direction is possible if something was changed within the last hour(s) before
syncing.

Stay clear of SyncToy until this has been fixed!

in my test, Synkron was not able to detect a conflict. I edited the same file
in 2 synced directories. FreeFileSync then detects a confilct. Synkron just
copied the file that was last edited over the other one without any hint...
