I am wanting to simply (if possible) synchronize files on one folder on my drive with an identical file in another folder. That is I want to be able to open a document (word document, power point, etc.) in one folder, make various changes and automatically have those changes take place on the "same" document on another folder. I'd like to be able to work back and forth - so no matter which file I have open - if I make changes it is making those same changes to the same document in another folder.

Does freefilesync do this? Is there a way to do this without a special program?

Put your answer in laymen's terms. I don't understand most of this computer jargon. Sorry.

You can use FreeFileSync for this purpose.
Simply use the (default?) two-way-sync for your synchronization settings.
You would then have two files in two locations, synchronized (only ..) when FFS is run.

Given your description above, you might however consider to use Hard Links, Junctions, Symbolic Links or Shortcuts, depending on your needs and the capabilities of your operating system. See e.g. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/.
In all those cases, there is actually only one file or folder, that might (seem to) reside in different locations.
No need to run any sync.
Possibly even more need to have a backup ...
