Unexpected file size change

Get help for specific problems

I've been using FreeFileSync without a problem for many months.

Recently, I've experienced an infrequent problem where the original files seems to sync OK to the drive (with lots of free space) that's attached to my Linksys e3000 router and mapped as a network drive on my PC.

As a specific example, five JPEG files appear to sync correctly. That is, if I immediately use Windows explorer to look at the synced files, they are all there and have the expected size and content. (They're pictures and the preview looks correct.) However, if I immediately do another Compare, FreeFileSync wants to copy the five files back to my PC and the files to be copied are now 0 bytes in size. And, now, Windows explorer confirms the file size change. (I've synced other files since first seeing the problem without seeing this behavior.)

I'm using FreeFileSync version 5.22. (It's been satisfactory for my needs, so I've been remiss in upgrading. I've read through the release notes but haven't recognize any comments that may relate to what I'm seeing.) If this is as simple as updating to the current version, I couldn't be happier.

The original files are on an up-to-date Windows 7 PC. The router firmware update is current.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

First check if this is really caused by FreeFileSync and not by some other system component: compare the results you see with Windows Explorer. If you are still convinced the problem is caused by FreeFileSync and it is reproducible with the most recent version, then this is something I'd like to investigate.

Thank you for your very generous offer. That offer caused me to be sure that something else wasn't causing the problem. After several failed experiments, late yesterday morning I disconnected the backup drive from my Linksys e3000 router, connected it directly to a computer, and started a CHKDSK run (with a /r switch) just before leaving for lunch. Between nine and ten hours later the task finally finished with a message "Windows has made some corrections to the file system." This morning I reconnected the drive to the router and ran some quick checks. Happily, the files change size no more.

I want to apologize for implying that this was a problem with FreeFileSync. I was hoping for a response like "I've seen that and just did <something> to fix it." Maybe I was a bit subtle.

Again, thanks for listening - and your offer.
