How do I connect the computers

I'm new to all this so....How do I connect the computers that I am trying to sync? Do I use a Cat5 crossover cable? Or do they have to be on the same network?

Never used one, so don't know if that would work or not?
You would think the cable being a physical layer, FFS shouldn't care or even necessarily know, you would think all it see is a network connection?
In any case, I would think straight networking would be more convenient.
