My Mac doesn't detect my Android phone's microSD as a storage device, does this mean that I can't use it with FFS?

Because I did that thing where I reformatted the microSD card in my phone, it doesn't come up in the finder on my Mac, and the absolutely nonsense that is Android File Transfer is the only thing that I can currently use to transfer files to my phone. Is there any way that I could use my phone with FFS without reformatting the micro SD again?

you can retrieve data by yourself. There are programs to do that.
I used it few times.it's free and it works as good as can be expected. The main thing is to stop using the external hard disk until you use this tool, and avoid writing any files to it.
