Hi
I have been using FFS for a number of years now and never had a problem but after running a recent sync I seemed to have lost most of my backed up files.
After the initial panic, I looked through the list of files in my backup folder and found two files named 'RecycleBin.ffs_tmp' and Recyclebin_0.ffs_tmp'.
My lost files were in the 'RecycleBin.ffs_tmp' folder and seemed to be intact but I do not know the best way to restore them back to my backups. I have considered just re-naming these tmp files but I am concerned that this could make matters worse or could I just create a new folder in the backup tree and move all the folders/files to it?
I think this came about due to my user error whilst setting up the latest sync as I have recently installed W10 on my machine and had not noticed the change concerning the 'My Documents' folder because in W10 this folder does not contain the Music-Pictures-Video folders, they are now separate folders, so when I set up the FFS sync I used the' My Documents' folder as I had always been using in W7 and the backup reflected this folder without Music-Pictures-Videos and without all of my old backed up files!!! I also think that I used the two way sync option by mistake.
Ihave also tried to copy the 'RecycleBin.ffs_tmp' and Recyclebin_0.ffs_tmp' folders to another internal H/D and the Recyclebin_0.ffs_tmp copied ok but because the 'RecycleBin.ffs_tmp' folder contains music files with long names, the restrictions in W10 Home Edition will only allow names up to 255 characters because the gpedit.msc option is only included in W10 Pro or above editions, typical MS policies----
Therefore I would be most grateful if someone can advise me how to go about reclaiming my files from the 'RecycleBin.ffs_tmp' folder so that they are back in my backup folder before they are deleted.
Thank you
David

RecycleBin.ffs_tmp is the folder where FreeFileSync puts the to be deleted/overwritten files before the whole folder is moved to the Windows Recycle Bin at the end of the sync. The fact that this folder exists means that he sync was somehow terminated externally. The hierarchical structure within this folder is still the original one, so you could just move those files one level up. As for the 260-chars limit, FreeFileSync does not have this limit and can copy files via CTRL+T.
