This is how to update FFS in Ubuntu from the provided .tar.gz file:
Unpack the file using the default archiver program
This will create the FreeFileSync folder (normally in same location as the tar.gz file)
In a terminal window, open your file manager under sudo (as a root)
Cut from the newly created FreeFileSync folder both FreeFileSync and the RealTimeSync executable files
Go to the /usr/bin folder and copy both files (replace the previous versions) in that location
Go back to the location where the new FreeFileSync folder was created from the .tar.gz file
Cut this time the entire FreeFileSync folder
Go now in the /usr/share folder
Copy and replace the existing FreeFileSync folder and its entire content
That it!
If you have a 32 bit computer, just do the same with the provided Debian 8.7 32_bit .tar.gz file
It works like a charm under Ubuntu (at least Ubuntu 16.04, on which I tested it)
