FFS 8.10 debian fails because it's not a .deb package

I was upset at seeing that FFS 8.10 comes in a tar.gz for debian instead as a .deb package. It does not install in linux mint.

Furthermore, make-jpkg gives the following error when converting the tar.gz into a .dcb:

No matching packaging method was found for FreeFileSync_8.10_Debian_8.7_64-bit.tar.gz

Furthermore, the following error appears when trying to install the tar.gz for Ubuntu:

E: Unsupported file ./FreeFileSync_8.10_Ubuntu_16.10_64-bit.tar.gz given on commandline

Furthermore, alien creates a .deb package from the tar.gz for Debian but that .deb does not install on linux mint.
