Changing target drives - files not backed up

I have a NAS which I’m backing up to external hard drives. The backup drives are in a hot-plug bay in my desktop PC. I always make the backup target drive the same drive letter.

When I swap drives, Free File Sync doesn’t realize that the target drive is different. This causes it not to backup files that were copied to the previous drive.

It scans the NAS mapped drives but does not scan the backup target drive looking for changes.

How do I get it to scan / realize that the backup target drive has changed so that all of the files not previously backed up to the 2nd drive will be copied?

In your scenario probably you must press the Compare button before pressing the Synchronize button.

Take a look at this discussion:
Bug?

But the solution is at this:
Synchronize on two or three devices

Giani1962 - thanks for the reply.

Hitting the compare button doesn't solve the issue.

Closing and reopening FFS does solve your issue?

May be also switching to another Configuration/Session and then switching back.

Gianni1962 - no to both. I've closed, opened, upgraded FFS with no luck. I have mutliple jobs setup (one for each directory I backup from the NAS) and it impacts all of them.

I appreciate the ideas though.

My setup is similar to your.

I regularly backup to two USB drives.
They have different volume labels as to avoid confusion.

My simple backup strategy is:
- today I backup to drive WD01
- tomorrow I backup to drive TOSHIBA01
and so on.

My FFS script use volume names instead of drive letters so I'm not forced to make sure the assigned drive letter is the same every time I plug them in.

But to help you I have created a modified script to put me in your same scenario.

In attach the script.
You can load it in your FFS and look freely at it.

Anyway I don't have your issue.

Those are my steps:

1) Open FFS and Open the script "Backup Documents to USB drive F.ffs_gui"

2) Connect drive WD01 and verify the assigned letter is F:
3) Hit Compare button, new/updated files to backup are shown
4) Hit Synchronize, files are copied to WD01
5) Remove WD01 drive using the "Safely remove" tray icon

6) Connect drive TOSHIBA01 and verify the assigned letter is F:
7) Hit Compare button, new/updated files to backup are shown (different from the previous)
8) Hit Synchronize, files are copied to TOSHIBA01
9) Remove TOSHIBA01 drive using the "Safely remove" tray icon

I hope that looking at my configuration something will make you ring a bell.
