I have been using FreeFileSync a few years but this is the first time I tried Cloud sync to a folder in Google Drive. I have successfully authorised, and created a folder on my usb drive but get the error as shown in the attachment. Is this because of the star I have put in my Google account username?

I have a star in the username but also a star in the folder name to differentiate the account.

It seems you identified the cause of your problem yourself.
An asterisk (*) is a reserved character and has a special meaning in file-name
specifications (any number of arbitrary characters in arbitrary sequence).
An asterisk (*) can therefore not be part of a normal file-name.
This is not an FFS limitation, but rests at a higher level.
So, don't expect it will be possible to solve this in FFS.

Thanks Plerry.
I will change the star for something else. (And in my Google account name too, for consistency). Do you think I would be ok replacing it with the + symbol instead? Maybe not a good idea to use Hash # or @. ?

See e.g. here.
You may consider to use an underscore (_). That is normally pretty safe.
