Windows Error Code 31: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
I have a my book live on the network and mapped the drive to X. How come this
only happens to ffs_tmp files? Is there a way to turn off ffs_tmp files to see
if it happens to others?
Keep getting errors for ffs_tmp files

I forgot to mention the 1st retry always works. Is there a way to auto retry?
On 1,630 files this happened about 10 times over a period of about 30 mins.
Most files are small.

Disable "menu->global settings:fail-safe file copy " to skip creating
temporary ".ffs_tmp" files. FFS will then directly create the target files.

Quite odd, "retry" just repeats the steps, nothing else. I'd suggest to
investigate what this error code 31 is about, by looking for information about
your hardware setup.

I tried a second time and got no errors. This is a new external My Book Live
NAS so I am sure the device is acting wierd. I do notice something else odd
though I see these .DAV folders in Free File Sync on the target NAS but not in
windows explorer. If I understand correctly this mean the mapped drive is
connected using WebDav instead of SMB. Anybody got a clue as to how to make it
map using SMB?

You should be able to select the protocol via the web interface of the NAS,
this should be explained in its manual.

When I run Free File Sync as Admin I see the .DAV Folders. When I don't run as
Admin I do not. Is FreeFileSync using a different API as Admin (Maybe Volume
Shadow Copy). It doesn't look like there is anyway to turn off web dav. It
just says Supported protocols CIFS/SMB, NFS, FTP, AFP. If I run windows
explorer as admin I still do not see the .DAV folders.

Got more info. It appears that my NAS supports WebDav and that in windows 7
for some reason likes to use the WebClient network service instead which
causes the slower WebDav to be used. I am going to try disabling WebClient
service next.

I'm glad your application noticed these files. :).

No, in both cases it's straight Win32-API. The only explanation would be if
access to these .DAV folders is denied in user-mode. But you'd see an error
message in this case, at least it would be in the log if errors are set to
"ignore".
Even if no errors are logged by FFS, there must be some at a certain lower
level. If you want to find out you can run Process Monitor
(https://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx) in both cases and see if you see anything
suspicious.

With my Windows Client Service turned off I always connect now using CIFS/SMB
and every thing works fast and I have no problem with the ffs_tmp files. I am
convinced now that webdav as implemented by the My Book Live NAS has problems.
I should not be seeing these .DAV folders any more anyway now.
thx.
