It seems all my database files were corrupted, that is, filled with NULL values. I suspect this happened after I had to kill one of the never ending Synchronising “Searching for old file versions” while syncing my NAS with my PC. The files were 100% synced after 35 minutes but the search part had gone on for over three hours and although STOP was requested it did not stop.
Any advice on how to prevent this happening again?
The standard advice seems to be to delete the database and start from scratch. Since this relates to several directories that is quite a time consuming manual task during re-syncing to recreate the database.
My workaround was to copy the database files from the sync that went wrong. There were several but it seemed to recover, but I’d rather not have this happen again.

When the database is corrupted, FreeFileSync will automatically create a new one and overwrite. Just make sure the sync directions are set correctly the before the first sync after such an event (FFS obviously can't do that lacking a database for reference).

Sounds like a permanent network connection issue/hang.
