Yes, it does preserve sparseness, I know. As it does read each block anyway, it can as well allocate it sparse on destination if the source is not- well, in principle - the question is whether it actually does. And if not, whether this would be a good idea for even further increasing the ...

Are Files copied as sparse only if the source is sparse?
Or will FFS make files sparse if the destination filesystem allows it even if the original file was not sparse?
