Clearly it's also not realistic for ...

Okay, that was it.
May I recommend adding the helpful tip from https://flathub.org/apps/org.freefilesync.FreeFileSync to your FAQ?

Thanks. I'm 99% sure I figured out what's happening and why. I'm using the flatpak packaging of FreeFileSync . This automatically sandboxes FreeFileSync from /usr/bin , which is where kompare is located. I just noticed the workaround on that page, and will ...

Re: Creating a custom context menuitem for FreeFileSync not working in Linux. How to get it working?
I wasn't able to test on Mint, but FWIW your command line does work on Kubuntu.
Thanks for checking on Kubuntu. Did you need to use any quotation marks different than in the string I used?
Linux Mint uses bash for the shell. What does Kubuntu use? If it's different, could FreeFileSync somehow ...

Without knowing Linux or specifics thereof, see if perusing these gets you going?
And I'll assume that your "terminal" is using a shell other then sh?
Likewise, if you ran sh, then (at this point in time) typed in, kompare, you would get the very same "command not found".

Creating a custom context menuitem for FreeFileSync not working in Linux. How to get it working?
I want to add a `Compare` context menu to FreeFileSync in Linux Mint.
To do this, I read:
https://freefilesync.org/manual.php?topic=external-applications
In the "Customize context menu" section of the "Options" dialog box of FreeFileSync 13.5, I then created the following custom context menu ...

Crackling static sound audible at beginning of every sound (audio file) played
FreeFileSync includes the helpful functionality of allowing the user to play an audio file when certain functions are concluded or if there is an error.
In Linux (tested on Linux Mint 21.3 with FreeFileSync 13.5), a noticeable and somewhat loud crackling static sound is audible at beginning of each ...

Re: Why ignore leading and trailing spaces?
It's an interesting issue, and I agree that it's not good to ignore differences. I think we need to understand why a file may have leading or trailing spaces. If it could be intentional, yes, I agree that FFS should treat differences as differences.

Re: REQUEST: Dark Theme for Windows 10
BTW, I realize this won't help most people here, but if it helps anyone, FreeFileSync supports dark themes quite well in Windows 7. You just create a dark theme for the OS, and FreeFileSync will use that dark theme.

Re: Where are databases for moved/renamed files stored?
All this writing/renaming/overwriting takes place only in the source/destination base folders, correct?... FFS writes both DB files as temporary files first, and only then renames them. Zenju, 18 Sep 2023, 06:36

They are stored in the left and right base-location(s), upon closing FreeFileSync, after having run a Compare and Sync.

Also, what is the method to get it out of this confused state?

I agree that it would be very nice to have the option, for OS / file systems that support it (e.g. Windows NTFS volumes), to specify that the target folder will be compressed by the operating system.

When you get the referred to warning in the FreeFileSync (FFS) GUI, you have the option to checkmark not to get that warning any more in the future. That should resolve your issue.
