Now I found all the causes of my confusion:

1. "*" matches ANY character and this includes de folder separator.
2. The filter applies to the complete relative path.

I want to exclude any temporary MS Office file (also from subfolders).
I don't need to distinguish from file or folder.
Suppose the temporary file always begin with "~$".

I tested the following patterns:
~$* -> works only for files from root folder.
\~$* -> same as above.
*\~$* -> works for files ...

It should be clear by now, that the intent is that the "Donation" and "Standard" FreeFileSync editions may not be used commercially. Zenju, 22 Dec 2023, 08:28

Got it, Zenju. I can't use FFS anymore and I'm removing it from my PC at home and from the USB flash drive.

If you buy something privately, but then use it for your work, it's obviously commercial use. Nothing gray about that.

@xCSxXenon Use at home is not the big issue here. The issue is I cannot use the Business edition at company (no admin power, no IT help) and the Donation portable edition cannot be used commercially. And I agree with you. My post is oriented to Zenju or anyone with same case.
