Thanks for the advice.

It appears the disk had a number of faults and I ended up trashing it.

I did reboot both my Mac and external disks. I also tried it on a different computer with the same result.

my Mac crashed while performing a sync. Now I cannot sync as FFS states the sync.ffs_lock exists. I am sure this message has previously timed out and then synchronisation continues but in this case, it just waits.

A search for sync.ffs_lock is not listed, even with hidden files displayed, on ...
