I had the same problem in Mint17 (Ubuntu Trusty 14.04) and only solved by adding a ppa with these 3 commands:-
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:freefilesync/ffs
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install freefilesync
Now I have the problem that I upgraded to Mint 18 which uses the Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial ...
