Sorry, you are right. It turns out I had EFS enabled too but given that I don't have anymore the decryption key (.pfx file) I cannot retrieve the files.

Files are not encrypted with BitLocker, only entire volumes. The scenario you proposed isn't possible

Bitlocker is a fantastic method for encryption. Microsoft has offered it for a long time and can't just yank support for it. It has a key that will decrypt it.
