I have run chkdsk /f on the drive and there are no problems. Bitlocker is not activated.

Sorry, you are right. It turns out I had EFS enabled too but given that I don't have anymore the decryption key (.pfx file) I cannot retrieve the files.

Files are not encrypted with BitLocker, only entire volumes. The scenario you proposed isn't possible
