I can copy the folders via compare/mirror, but I cannot update, the entire folder gets copied anew

I've seen the post of 10. Jan. 2023 viewtopic.php?t=9974&hilit=mtp+device#p36924

but I wonder if there's an easier way?

I think xCSxXenon covered it with his link.

My recommendation is:

Try following the instructions for setting up the SFTP server from Google Play.
Here is the FREE app in Google Play that I use:

thank you guys, but I give up (SFTP server is far too complicated for me, and after I installed the cx file explorer on my Android tablet I still connect to my PC with mtp)

WAIT!!

If you have Cx File Explorer, you have traditional FTP server.
1. Go to Network Tab
2. Click yellow Access from Network button. Follow it from there.

I could give you screen shots on configuring the SFTP app. It can be tricky at first. I remember being overwhelmed too. You just need to create a user and start the server.

Dear Flowers4, if you have the patience I should very much like screenshots. Both what I have to do in preparation with my Android device and my PC

Open Cx File Explorer, go to the "Network" tab, tap "Access from network", click "START SERVICE"
This will give you a location, username, and password; Mine is "ftp://192.168.3.43:5899", "pc", and "908330"

To use in FFS:
- Click the cloud icon next to the browse button where you select a location
- Click "FTP"
- Type in the ip address only, for me it is "192.168.3.43"
- Type in the port, the number after ":", for me it is "5899"
- Type in username and password, for me they are "pc" and "908330"
- Click "browse" to select a folder on your phone to use in FFS
- Click "OK"

You can also use it in File Explorer:
Open File explorer, in the address bar at the top, type in the ftp address. For me, it was "ftp://192.168.3.43:5899"
Push ENTER, type in the username and password in the box that pops up, submit, done

You can also map it so it persists, but then you need to make sure the phone keeps the same ip and password. Figure that out on your own if you want lol

Here are a couple of screen shots.

The default port will be 2222
Step one is to create a user on the user page. I have an arrow pointing to it.
After you start the server it will show you your phones wifi address. It will be the same as in your phone's settings wifi settings. You only type the ip address into FFS.
