For security, file system is presented to backup server as read-only.

When I mirror from this read-only source, it tries to create a sync.fss_db.2824.fss_tmp file in the top level of the source directory and throws an error.

How can I prevent it from trying to write to the source or specify an alternative location for this sync.fss_db.2824.fss_tmp file?

You have selected to run a TwoWay-sync or to "Detect moved files". In both cases FFS will (try to) create a database file at either side (left and right), and throws an error when unable to do so.

As your "source" (likely your left base location) is read only, there is no need to use a TwoWay sync, as all changes will be copied in just one direction, left-to-right.
So, you can use a Mirror or Update sync variant.

Mirror can also use the db files. When you select 'mirror' sync, make sure "Detect moved/renamed files" is unchecked
