How do I activate the donation edition for my mac and windows computers? I overwrote my donation edition. Thanks

You're saying you overwrote your existing donation edition with the current donation edition version?
Are you using ZIP or .exe (on Windows)?
In either case, there should be a 'Registered.dat' file (in the ZIP or [not sure exactly, but similar along with the .exe]).
That Registered.dat file is specific to the particular FFS version.
(IOW an older Registered.dat will not work on any version of FFS except that with which it came with.)
Except for ensuring that (the correct, for the version of FFS you are running) Registered.dat file is there, you shouldn't have to do anything.
If still not working, download the donation edition, again, & try again.

I don't manually put the key file anywhere. When you do the installation it should create a file called Registered.dat in the FFS program directory, C:\Program Files\FreeFileSync\Resources
