Output sync file lost - Have to rebuild very large backup

I did a successful mirror backup on a very large collection of folders in Windows 11. Now the sync file on the backed up version appears to be lost and when I try the same Mirror function I get "no files to syncronize". The files are there but I can see any way to resync without deleting the output and compeltely rebuilding. This takes hours. Any suggestions?

You seem to be contradicting yourself:

which is consistent with

If the files are there, and "no files to synchronize",
how can they appear to be lost and require completely rebuilding?

My apologies. I guess after years of use I have never seen that message. I should have done a bit more investigating. The message was completely accurate. When i changed one of the files I indeed saw that there was one to be sync'd. Too many late nights :-)
