Newbie - Won't copy all files. Get "input/output error"

Hi. I am trying to backup my data to an external hard drive. Mostly photos. It copied a whole bunch of files, then got errors for the rest. When I rerun the program, I get the same errors. See screen shot. Google search yields nothing.

I also get an error that it can't create a folder.

I have permissions to write on the hard drive. So how can I fix this?

I manually was able to copy some of the files using "Finder".

Sounds like a bad cable, or damaged USB port on one side or the other, or a failing external drive
