Is it possible to just display modified files after running a compare rather than all files ? I've looked all over for that option but couldn't find anything ( but being a brand new user I've probably overlooked it somewhere ). Thanks in advance for any help.

Mid below the Compare results are icons for each of the applicable Compare result categories.
You can toggle the visibility of each of these categories by clicking the corresponding icons.

In the screenshot I assume you mean the ->+2 icon. I've tried that but I still see all of the unmodified files. I've also tried clicking on the action indicator mid above the compare results which shows me all of the files to be copied, modifed or whatever but still I see the unmodified files. I would prefer, by default, to see only files that need modifying, I'm not at all interested in seeing files where no action is needed.

The "->+" 2 icon is the icon corresponding to the Compare result category for which FFS proposes the action to copy files left-to-right.
But just left of that "->+" 2 icon there is the "=" 1,290 icon, corresponding to the 1290 files that FFS considers equal left-vs-right, and proposes no action. If you click that "=" 1,290 icon you, toggle the visibility of that Compare result category.

> I would prefer, by default, to see only files that need modifying ...
That is exactly the default when you newly install FFS.
So somewhere along the line you must have changed that.
But, you can adjust the visibility per Compare result category according to your preference (by clicking said icons), and the save that view as your default via the small gray arrow just right of (in your case) the "->+" 2 icon mid below the compare results.
