Currently in FreeFileSync the main area named Drag & drop that shows folder-pairs can be grabbed at its bottom and extended down - even to the point of hiding completely the bottom area that shows by default Relative path
But this visual adjustment made by user does not get remembered between closing and re-opening of FFS
And so, if this is a bug - then please fix it
But if this is a safety feature, that is suppose to prevent users from loosing access to that bottom area - then there already is a counter measure available inf form of that
Tools > Reset Layout
option which brings it back. But if that is not good enough - then I propose introduction of a fail-safe compromise: after reopening of program the bottom area thrown entirely out of the window by the upper area could be brought back in a minimalist way i.e. with just 1 or 2 lines. This way it would re-communicate to the user that such area exists without reverting entirely the choice of seeing more folder-pairs

The area simply auto-sizes to show the folder pairs of the sync configuration. Is there any reason it shouldn't behave this way?

FFS *does* remember manual resizing internally, but it simply doesn't render empty space upon restart or when changing configurations. You'll note the difference when you add folder pairs and see that it auto-expands to exactly where you resized previously.

So in other words: if user has a lot of folder-pairs there is no way the upper area will unfolds itself to accommodate all of them upon re-opening of FSS?
