New FFS user/Long term SyncToy - I have several folders that are "Mirrored" to several different disks. On one disk, a USB disk mounted on my router all 3 letter folder names are changed from uppercase to lowercase. This only appears to happen on the router mounted USB disk. However, the remaining disks are HDD . I thought I discovered a way to change the target folder names in FFS Action Field between the source and target relative paths. It suggests that it would change the lowercase folder name on the target to the uppercase on souce. No such luck. I know there has been some discussion about FFS changing the 3 character file type in filename.filetype to lowercase but I have seen mention of the file folder. None of the files in these folders have 3 character names but I haven't traced through all folders.

I realize under Windows this doesn't make a difference. The uppercase source folder name and the lowercase folder name make the folder contents equal. I use a fair number 3 letter folder names for abbreviated identification and hope there is fix. AI was useless. I have tried deleting the 3 character source folders, but new lowercase ones reappears upon transfer. I've even tried rename to longer names on the source and does appear on the target. However, If try change the name to original 3 character it reverts to lowercase. I've tried everything I could thing of, even rename the target folder and gives a error. I have over 50 folder pairs to various disks on different computers and this is the only "strange" thing I've discovered although I haven't setup FreeFileSync with all of my folder pairs. Having used SyncToy for as long I can remember I was the "shakedown" mode with FFs. Any idea?

Both Windows 10¹ and Windows 11² are buggy with regards to changing file name case on USB, when the file system is FAT or KDDFS. In these two cases FFS implements a workaround. What file system does your USB-connected drive have?

1) Windows 10 (FAT, FAT32, exFAT) silently ignores file rename operations that only change case

2) Windows 11 is even weirder: original issue fixed, but now there's a different bug:
1. rename "test.bin" to "test.biN" => works
2. rename "test.biN" to "test.bin" => ignored
2. again, rename "test.biN" to "test.bin" => suddenly works!?

to FreeFileSync

All disk file systems, including the USB memory, are NTFS based. However, the Netgear router runs LINUX with a server name "ReadyShare" for the 2 attached disks to the router. I also run VOIP through the router and of course the disk where this issue occurs. This is distinctly different from the other disks mounted on Win 10, 11, and yes, Win 8.1. So the files are being transferred from Windows 10 in this case, to a server running under Linux. I feel there is a connection there. However, I abandoned Linux 25 years ago after I had retired. I'm not a Windows/Microsoft fan, but the computing I do in retirement is better suited for Windows. I have to do some research on how the Linux server may be impacting the file transfer from Windows. It shouldn't be any issue. I don't transfer files via SyncToy to the second disk (NTFS) on the router and don't plan to use FFS for that purpose. It's primarily for backup files from my system.

Any thoughts on that angle.

Best Regards ...... Phil

Found this on Reddit Not sure the link is right but sheds some light. Doesn't appear to have anything to do with FFS

What file system is shown when you right-click, go to properties in Windows Explorer on the USB-mounted drive?
