FFS Not Registering Folder Contents

I am running a clean install of FFS 14.9 64-bit.
I noticed some issues with normal file comparisons, where the program did not register the contents of selected folders, but merely advised "No files to synchronise", so I deleted my instance of FFS, downloaded and re-installed the latest version and set up a test case of two folders containing exact copies of files and subfolders, then attempted to compare them. The result: blank side-by-side comparison panels and the advisory "No files to synchronise". Nothing to see here, folks!
Perplexed.
Any hints or sage advice greatly appreciated.

FFS doesn't display equal line-items by default.
Look at the bottom of the window, should see an '=' box you can click
