Automatic Sync and Path Side Order

Discuss new features and functions

Anonymous

I am confused about the different characteristics of the Automatic File Sync
feature.

Currently, FreeFileSync is being used on a flash drive (shown as G:\ below)
where it is take between college and home. This required setting up two
different sync setting files as the drive letters and paths differ between the
two workstations.

Here's what confuses me...

When I set up a new configuration with my flash drive to the left and perform
a sync, the column down the middle displays greater than and less than signs.
Synchronizing still works just fine, but I am unable to modify the file
actions for individual files. Also, the greater than and less than signs are
rather cryptic.
Notice the screenshot:

But if I create a new configuration with the flash drive (G:\) on the right
side, I get a meaningful icon displaying where the file is going to go. In
addition, it gives me the option to change the action of an individual file.

Notice here:

This happens both at the college workstation and at home.
This characteristic was probably done intentionally, but I don't understand
the purpose.

Am I supposed to put my removable media always on the right side?

Hi,

FFS has two views on its data: 1. comparison result and 2. sync-preview. You
can switch between both views via middle-grid's context menu or ALT-W.

> but I am unable to modify the file actions for individual files

Therefore you'd have to switch to 2.

> But if I create a new configuration...

In this case the default setting is 2.

> Am I supposed to put my removable media always on the right side?

Doesn't matter.

> Also, the greater than and less than signs are rather cryptic.

You're right. I really should find some more meaningful icons (when I got more
time). Until then, you can get a description by moving your mouse cursor above
them.

Zenju,

Thanks for the explanation; this helps quite a bit.

I was clicking around, but I didn't realize that there was a context menu
there. Quite handy.

Thanks again,
Matt

PS
This has been working flawlessly so far this quarter. Also working perfectly
for a quick backup of all my documents.
