All I want to do is use Real Time Sync to back up my Photos and Documents folders from my internal (I) to external (J )drive. I don't understand what commands to use. Is there a simple noob-friendly manual? Thanks.

You don't use Real Time Sync to backup your files. All I want to do is use Real Time Sync to back up my Photos and Documents ...Geos
Real Time Sync (RTS) just monitors designated folders (and subfolders) for changes,
and upon detection of any such changes invokes an application, the default of which here is
FreeFileSync (FFS). FFS performs the comparison and the synchronization.
FFS can be invoked with a command and command-line options, but you might prefer the very convenient GUI.... I don't understand what commands to use. Is there a simple noob-friendly manual? Geos
Please consult the FFS manual and FAQ (https://freefilesync.org) for further info. In combination, it is pretty complete.

Not so much a "noob-friendly manual". More like the following: install program, prepare a couple of folders with unimportant files to mess around with, work through https://freefilesync.org/manual.php top to bottom whilst playing around without trying to fully understand everything. Repeat a couple more times over the next couple of days. All I want to do is use Real Time Sync to back up my Photos and Documents folders from my internal (I) to external (J )drive. However, in summary, having got a basic understanding of FFS as suggested above:
1. Create Job: Use the FFS interface to create and fine tune your backup job.
2. Oversee Running of Job: The first few times you want to backup your files, start FFS, select your backup job, then use the compare and synchronise facilities to backup your files whilst making sure you have everything configured properly.
3. Manually Start Job: Save your settings as a "batch job". This allows you to create a shortcut whereby you simply click on the shortcut to run the job. Obviously you make sure your files are being backed up properly.
4. Schedule Backup Job: When ready, (depending on what you are trying to achieve), you can create a scheduled task to run the "batch job" so that your files get backed up automatically at a specified time.
With regards to "Real Time Sync" facility, i don't think it applies to what you are trying to achieve. Although not hard to use, i suggest you leave it for the time being and focus on learning the basics of FFS.
