FFS fail? v 5.23 Build Nov1 2013 Unicode x86 portable Win 7

Program has been running beautifully, updated to 5.23, caught a brief glimpse of something like log error. Now doesn't compare. re-typed directories [1 hd, 1 memstick], hit <compare>, blinks, nothing happens. Found sync.ffs_db, removed/changed name/replaced - no change. Previously I've been checking on how well it does the job and so far it's better than me.

Is this a version thing?

just noticed that the sync.ffs_db is 154k on one sync side and 611k on the other, but is that normal?

Also checked the obvious - program says all files are in sync but checking shows different ates and sizes.
