FFS creates too many subfolders

I have a PC that is syncing with a network drive. It is a very simple synchronization with all of the files in a subfolder being synced to a network subfolder. There are no subfolders located in the local drive folder that is being synchronized. FFS is making a subfolder within a subfolder within a subfolder ad infinitum. Every time it syncs a changed file, it makes a new subfolder within all of the previously created subfolders. This then exceeds the Microsoft limit and I can't delete the subfolders. What is going on? Ideas would be appreciated!
