Hello
So i have a few files on my external drive and my pc. They are exact same except the names are different. When I sync them I notice freefilesync just copies the files from external to pc and pc to external instead of just renaming one side.
So i have now 2 copies of the same files on each side.
How can I make it only rename the files on one side?
Two files same but different name. it just copies.

Did you ever run a FFS (two-way) sync between those two locations before?
In order be able to detect moved or renamed files, a FFS database-file (*.ffs_db) needs to exist in both the left and right base-locations.
Such database-files are only created while running an FFS sync, so the first time ever you run an FFS sync, FFS has no means to know if have moved or are renamed files.
Similarly, if you would happen to remove one or both *.ffs_db-files, FFS has to build new *.ffs_db files, and during its first sync has no way to tell if files have been moved or renamed.

@Silhorn
Did you setup "Detect Moved Files" ?
User Manual - Synchronization Settings - Detect Moved Files
