What I need is software that backs up LinuxMint 18.3 operating system and all user files to an external hard drive such that if my main hard drive dies, I can simply replace it with the backed up hard drive and continue working where I left off. Is this what FreeFileSync can do for me?
Thank you

Not really. FreeFileSync is for files. In addition to the files on the filesystem, a hard disk contains a master boot record and partition table. Those are not copied by FreeFileSync, to my knowledge.

If you want to clone a disk, you could use the dd utility. See https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/2-methods-to-clone-your-linux-hard-drive/ for some basic examples. Or a separate disc you boot to, such as a copy of Clonezilla, to clone your hard disk to another disk.
