I am copying an 18 GB file between a Synology RS18017xs+ a Windows 10 computer, build 1803, on 10Gb with the latest version of FreeFileSync. Here are the speeds and those of Windows Explorer.
FreeFileSync
local SSD (NVMe) to Synology, 167 MB/sec
Explorer
local SSD (NVMe) to Synology, 478 MB/sec
FreeFileSync
Synology to local SSD (NVMe), 67 MB/sec
Explorer
Synology to local SSD (NVMe), 297 MB/sec
There are two things that jump out. Regardless of which program I use, there is an odd asymmetry in performance with writing to the Synology's SAS hard disks somehow being faster than writing an NVMe SSD. Second, FreeFileSync's performance is way slower than Explorer. Why might that be?
Synology and NVMe SSD slow copying
