Can I get a version of FreeFileSync that will run on XP SP2?

Hi. I have a computer on which I would love to run FreeFileSync, but it's running XP SP2, and for various reasons I can't/won't update it to SP3. Is there an older but stable version of FreeFileSync that will run on SP2? and how would I obtain it? Thanks for any assistance! --Steve D.

What happens if you try to run FreeFileSync?

Hi, Zenju,
I get a Windows Stop error message: "The procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll." and the program won't launch.
I googled around, and found messages stating that the latest version of FreeFileSync won't run on SP2, but rather it requires SP3, and upgrading to SP3 will prevent the message and allow the program to run.
I probably don't need ALL of the features of FFS, so I was hoping that a previous version would run on SP2!

What is your requirement for XP SP2 ? XP SP 3 is the last supported by anyone in that series. To be clear, I can understand XP SP3 for operational reasons but not XP SP2 which is seriously dead
If it is an issue of files there are number of utilities (including FFS under *nix) that may help, but the base is you orta stop using that version of XP before now

My main laptop runs XP SP2. It's 7 years old, the last of the Thinkpads that had excellent screens. Years ago, when I upgraded to SP3, it broke my Adobe Photoshop, and a couple other programs that I needed. So I downgraded to SP2, and have been happy as a clam ever since.
I know, it's waaaaaaay out of date, but I'm just not willing to go through the potential problems of upgrading this to SP3, and I saw some fabulous reviews of FreeFileSync, so I'm fishing around for the latest version that would run on SP2.
I'm not familiar enough with sourceforge to know what "under *nix" means. Can you help?
Thanks again!

I was under the assumption that FFS was supporting Windows 2000 and later, but the oldest test system is XP SP3. Does the error message say in the title which component failed to load "GetLogicalProcessorInformation"? I would expect an OS dependency in one of FFS's DLLs.

I revised the checks during DLL load to check for XP SP 3 rather than XP only. Let me know if this works:

Hi, Zenju,
First of all, let me tell you how much I appreciate that you are helping me with this. I have been using xxcopy and robocopy to do backups, but there are problems with both, and I was hoping I could get FFS to work for me.
I installed that 7.1_beta that you prepared, but I got the exact same error. Remember, if it checks for XP3, I *don't* have that. The message says "The procedure entry point GetLogicalProcessorInformation could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll." It seems that XP3 has that item in *its* KERNEL32.dll, but maybe XP2 does not. Does that make sense?
Thanks again.

Yes, GetLogicalProcessorInformation needs SP3. I thought this is simple to fix, but the dependency to GetLogicalProcessorInformation is not coming from my code, probably from boost. This could be a showstopper for pre-SP3-XP support in general.

Yeah. But wasn't there a previous version of FFS, an older version, perhaps that came out before SP3 came out, which should work with SP2?

Sure, but I can't say when XP SP2 support was broken. The archive can be found here:

Okay, here's what I discovered. 6.5 for Windows would not run on my XP SP2, but 6.0 WOULD. I'm going to test it over the next few days, and I'll report back, but so far, so good!

Just to help tidy things re Win XP, I am using a (not main) 10+ year old Toshiba P30 running WinXPSP3. I have just tested and FFS7.1 is fine.
Steven & Zenju, there are some other things to check like SSE support that result in software not working. e.g. hardware that doesn't have SSE2 support is being dropping off major open source software projects.
Steven, thinking back to your reason for not having XP3 how crap is your h/w ? HWINFO http://www.hwinfo.com/ works on WinXP (other folk can happily suggest alternatives).
The point is that you might not be looking for a version of FFS that supports WinXPSP2 but a version that supports a processor without SSE2.
