Is it possible to save configurations centrally in an NAS directory?
My workhorse for syncing is a power efficient Computer, running 24/7 - My workstation is where I do the configurations and tests. It would be quite convenient to be able to save configurations acccessible from any machine.

You should be able to run saved sync configurations stored in any accessable location.
Obviously, if you run these sync(s) on different machines, any drive mappings to network locations involved in the syncs should be identical for all machines involved (or purposely point to each user's network home directory) or, instead of drive mappings, the sync should use network address notations.
Similarly, the path's on the local machines should be identical (or make use of Macros)
